There are many key attractions in Guatemala City, but one of the most striking is Cayalá City. It could be described as a city within a city, as it encompasses pedestrian streets, squares, restaurants and numerous leisure areas all in one place. 

It also boasts a neat, European-inspired aesthetic. All this and more makes it a place quite unlike the rest of the capital. For some travellers, Cayalá City is one of those intriguing stops that simply cannot be left off any itinerary. For others, it's a pleasant way to enjoy a quiet afternoon where strolling and taking photos take centre stage.

Why has the City of Cayalá become so famous?

The truth is that the city of Cayalá has become famous for offering an experience that is quite unusual in Guatemala. Its streets, open squares, terraces and shops are all designed to be explored at a leisurely pace, savouring every step of the way. Its best selling point is that it can be described as the city that has it all. 

This encompasses the beauty of its surroundings. Its white buildings, cobbled streets and squares, reminiscent of a small European village, really stand out.

Meanwhile, its neoclassical and colonial architecture come together in the famous sculpture of the Giant of Cayalá. Furthermore, part of its appeal lies in the sense of order. This city functions as a clean and safe space, with a strong focus on leisure. Where is Cayalá City, and how is it connected to Guatemala City?

To give you a better idea of where it's, Cayalá City is located in Zone 16 of Guatemala City, in the eastern part of the capital. The usual way to get there is via Rafael Landívar Boulevard. This is one of the main routes for reaching the area from different parts of the city. 

If we consider its relationship with Guatemala City, we can say that it's quite special. Although it's true that it forms part of the capital, it has developed into a mixed-use development, featuring residential, cultural and entertainment areas. The main advantage for travellers is that you can visit Cayalá City without having to organise a complicated itinerary. This is because you’ll find all the amenities you need right there in one place. 

It goes without saying that Cayalá City is not representative of the whole city. Rather, it's an exclusive, well-organised area. 

History and origins of Cayalá City

The history of Cayalá City is inextricably linked to the growth of Zone 16. The development of this area began long before Cayalá became the complex we know today. In fact, the earliest references date back to 1920. Decades later, in 1982, development began with residential projects, and little by little the area took shape. 

From a private urban development project to a 'city within a city'

It must be said that the most significant breakthrough came with the master plan for Cayalá City, which was drawn up from 2003 onwards. This plan sought to create an urban space capable of bringing together housing, retail and leisure facilities, amongst other things. 

In 2011, retail areas were opened, cementing the project’s status as a comprehensive urban development. Since then, it has continued to grow thanks to the addition of apartments, offices, restaurants and hotels. It's for this reason that it's regarded as a city within a city, as it constitutes a larger-scale urban development.

In addition to everything it has to offer – which, as we can see, is incredibly diverse – another key reason for its fame is its design. From its pedestrianised streets to its balconies and terraces, the whole setting gives us the feel of a traditional town, albeit one with very modern amenities.

As we’ve been saying, visiting Cayalá City doesn’t require sticking to a strict itinerary. The best thing to do is to wander around, have a drink on any of the terraces and, of course, always leave a little room for spontaneity. Because here, it’s not just about visiting a specific spot, but about being able to enjoy the whole experience, which has so much to offer. 

Squares, pedestrian streets and the atmosphere of a European town

There’s no doubt that pedestrianised streets are always a major draw, as they make for a more pleasant stroll – free from traffic – and are perfect for those travelling with children or simply for people who prefer a peaceful walk. The squares serve as meeting points and, moreover, are reminiscent of a Mediterranean village rather than a large Central American capital. The secret to their success? Offering an urban experience whilst combining it with a unique aesthetic and a leisurely pace. 

Shops, arcades and shopping areas in Cayalá City

It’s a large shopping area, as it’s home to language schools, cinemas and other amenities, as we’ve mentioned. So you can enjoy a stroll, certainly, but also an afternoon’s shopping. There are designer shops, of course, but not only that – you’ll also find bookshops and beauty salons nearby. Of course, a shopping area like this isn’t exactly cheap. Many visitors feel it’s a special area and well worth spending some time in, but they do note that it’s more expensive compared to other parts of Guatemala City. 

Sculptures and iconic landmarks, such as the Giant of Cayalá

One of the best-known attractions in Cayalá City is the Giant of Cayalá. It's a sculpture created by the artist Walter Peter Brenner. The sculpture depicts a giant who appears to be emerging from the ground, holding a key in his hand. 

It’s truly impressive, as it’s around 18 metres long and 3 metres high. It was opened in 2014 and has become one of the most photographed spots in the complex. However, given all the beauty that surrounds us, it’s not the only place to snap a souvenir photo.

Restaurants and leisure in Cayalá City

If we add the local cuisine to the atmosphere, the peace and quiet, and the wide range of attractions, we have the perfect package for a fantastic trip. We mustn’t forget that the local cuisine is an essential part of the experience. To that end, there are plenty of terraces, restaurants and other venues where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner.

There is also a wide variety of dining options. You’ll find a good selection of international cuisine, as well as more casual options such as tapas. As a result, all the cafés make the most of the pedestrianised atmosphere.

Cinemas, family activities and low-key afternoon/evening plans

It goes without saying that Cayalá City is also a great option for families. You can get about at a more leisurely pace without constantly having to worry about the traffic. This is all thanks to its pedestrianised streets and square-like open spaces. Within the area, you’ll find cinemas and entertainment venues. If it seems like a good plan during the day, it’s no less appealing when night falls. That’s because the atmosphere changes completely. The lights on the terraces and in the restaurants create the perfect setting for a drink or dinner. How do I get to Cayalá City from different parts of Guatemala City? 

Getting to Cayalá City is usually easiest by car or taxi. As the area is in the eastern part of the city, journey times depend largely on traffic and where you’re coming from. For example, from areas such as Zone 10, Zone 14 or the city centre, the journey time can vary considerably depending on the time of day. Travelling by car: access routes, car parks and approximate journey times

If you’ve already decided to drive, the most common route into Cayalá City is via Rafael Landívar Boulevard. The complex has visitor car parks, which makes things much easier, whether you’re travelling in your own car or a hire car. There are reportedly around 3,600 visitor parking spaces. Although this may seem like a lot, bear in mind that at weekends or during special events, they may be fuller. 

Other transport options for visiting Cayalá City

Of course, if you don’t have a car, you can always get there by taxi or using ride-hailing apps such as Uber or similar services. For many travellers, this is the most convenient option, especially if they’re travelling from hotels in Zone 10, Zone 14 or central areas. 

If you’re not very familiar with Guatemala City, it’s best to opt for a direct transfer, especially if you’re returning at night. 

Practical tips for visiting Cayalá City

As we’ve been saying, visiting this place is straightforward, but the experience can be even better if you choose the right time of day. It’s not the same going in the morning, when the atmosphere is more peaceful, as it's at sunset, when the terraces and the lights take centre stage. So, remember that:

• If you're looking for photos and peace and quiet, it's best to go in the morning. 
• If you prefer a lively atmosphere, music and packed terraces, then the late afternoon and early evening are your best bet. 
• If you're setting off from the city centre, try to go mid-morning or after lunch. 
• Another useful tip is not to limit your visit to the main street alone. Explore the hidden corners and side streets.
• Try to mix things up a bit so your visit isn’t just about walking around and eating out. You could go for a spot of shopping or a trip to the cinema.

By making just a few small adjustments like the ones we’ve mentioned, we can make the visit both more comfortable and more seamless.

Every morning when you wake up in Cayalá City, you can make the most of it by going for a leisurely stroll and perhaps stopping for a coffee. Afternoons, on the other hand, have a different pace, and you can use the time to go shopping, enjoy an ice cream and round off your day with another walk. It’s also the perfect time to make the best family plans. Want to avoid the crowds? Then it’s best to go during the week. At weekends or on public holidays, there’s always a livelier atmosphere and, as such, more people about. But if you’re the sort who prefers to let the atmosphere take over your holiday, go for the late afternoon and evening hours and let yourself be carried away by the magic of the music and the lights.

Approximate prices and the sort of people who usually visit 

If we think about the sort of people who usually visit this place, we have to say that the crowd is incredibly diverse. You’ll find everything from families and couples to groups of friends, both from the local area and further afield. One of the best things to do is simply have a stroll around because, as you know, it’s the cheapest option – it’s free. Of course, in the local restaurants you can find starters from around Q55–Q75 and full meals from Q95–Q140. Although in more upmarket establishments the prices will be slightly higher. 

On the other hand, you also need to bear parking in mind. Some developments offer a flat rate of Q15, but standard rates can vary depending on the day, time and length of stay. So it’s best to check them once you arrive. If you’re also planning to go to the cinema or do certain family activities, you’ll need to factor in an extra cost. So, you can strike a balance between all the options in Cayalá City and your wallet will thank you for it.
